Time to add the Privacy Statement link

Greetings!

The UW Web Advisory Committee recently reported the UW Privacy Statement has been updated to include a section on Google Analytics. Please read the following questions for more information and to find out what you need to do.

Why do we need a privacy statement if we're using Google Analytics?

Google Analytics collects data about users and stores it on their servers in the USA. Google may transfer this information to other parties when required to do so by US law. It is our duty to ensure that users are aware that UW websites are doing this.

We’ve implemented Google Analytics on our UW website. What should I do?

Please add the text Privacy Statement to the right of the Feedback link in your template’s footer. Then link the text to the UW’s Information and Privacy web page at http://www.uwaterloo.ca/privacy/

How do I make the change in a Dreamweaver template?

For those using the UW CLF template with Dreamweaver, the following steps may be useful:

1. Open your template in Dreamweaver (local site - ensure the latest files have been synchronized locally).

2. Modify the template’s footer with the above text and URL

3. Save your template.

4. When prompted to ‘Update’ all files based on template, click the ‘Update’ button. The change will be applied to all the local files based on the template.

5. ‘Put’ or ‘Synchronize’ as usual so the web server files (remote files) are also updated.

6. Test by checking your website in your browser.

We don’t use Google Analytics on our website. Do I still need to do something?

We encourage you to add the link since our users may navigate from one campus website to another.

Will there be more changes to the UW Privacy Statement?

The UW Privacy Statement may be enhanced in the future to include other analytic software such as awstats.
